Gordon Gouveia joined Shaw Gussis in 2005 following his judicial clerkship with the Honorable Eugene R. Wedoff in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Mr. Gouveia has substantial experience in all aspects of complex business bankruptcy matters, including out-of-court restructurings, assignments for the benefit of creditors, and chapter 7, 11 and 13 proceedings, including liquidations, 363 sales, reorganizations, avoidance actions, claim prosecution and non-dischargeability disputes. He has represented a wide range of clients, including business debtors, guarantors, secured and unsecured creditors, equity holders, committees, assignees, receivers and trustees.
For the second consecutive year in 2012, Mr. Gouveia was named a “Rising Star” in the Illinois Super Lawyers publication for Bankruptcy & Creditor/Debtor Rights. Some of his representative engagements include:Representing the liquidating trustee for a national homebuilder spearheading the prosecution of claim objections and several hundred avoidance actions
Counsel to the liquidating trustee in chapter 11 proceedings for a national homebuilder involving the liquidation of real estate holdings and prosecution of claim objections and adversary proceedings.
Counsel to a lumber company in the orderly out-of-court sale and liquidation of its business.
Counsel to group of related debtors seeking to restructure debt or sell assets in chapter 11 proceedings.
Counsel to national mortgage company in complex commercial litigation.
Counsel to state financing authority in connection with chapter 7, 11 and 12 proceedings.
Counsel to the liquidating trustee in chapter 11 proceedings for a former railroad real estate company involving complex environmental issues.
Counsel to a regional bank in foreclosure, collection and non-dischargeability proceedings.

Mr. Gouveia is currently the co‐chair of the Entertainment Committee and a member of the Steering Committee of the Turnaround Management Association Chicago/Midwest Chapter. He formerly served as co‐chair of the Young Lawyers Section Bankruptcy Committee of the Chicago Bar Association and is a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute.
